Nestopia UE NES emulator

Nestopia is a free and portable Nintendo Entertainment System (NES/Famicom) emulator. It allows you to play and emulate ROM files from the NES system while enjoying past favorites from the 80s and early 90s. Playing NES Roms with this emulator is a piece of cake and the ability of this application to properly replicate Nintendo games is excellent.

  • 80five is a NES emulator by Gary Boyes. Originally titled MarioNES, the project has been rewritten from scratch. Its an average emulator, with features including DirectX support, gamepad support, full screen mode, multiple resolutions, and standardized save state support. It also includes a memory & palette viewer.
  • An NES emulator written in C for nothing but fun. Roughly 40-50% of games should work (ie. Games that use either no mapper or mappers 1, 2 or 3). Examples of games that have been tested to run (but NOT limited to): (USA/Japan or World versions only i.e. NTSC compatible) Super Mario Bros. Contra; Adventure Island; Ninja Gaiden; Wrecking Crew.

Based on the excellent Nestopia emulator by Martin Freij, Nestopia UE (Undead Edition) is one of the better NES emulators to play NES games on a Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista or XP computer.

Play NES games with the Nestopia UE emulator on Windows 10, Windows 8 en Windows 7

So, what do you need to do to play NES games (like Legend of Zelda) on Windows with the Nestopia UE emulator?

  • Make sure you have DirectX 9.0c installed
  • Download the Nestopia UE Binary zip for Windows (nestopia_1.5x-win32.zip)
  • Copy the contents of the zip file to an empty folder of choice
  • Create a folder for your NES games in the Nestopia folder
  • Search for a NES game file and copy it to the game folder you've created (if it's zipped, unzip it)
  • Start Nestopia UE with nestopia.exe
  • Choose Options - Input to check the controller settings
  • Choose Options - Paths to configure the path to your games (first field, uncheck last visited)
  • Choose File - Open to start your game of choice!
  • To save a game, press F5
  • To load a saved game, press F7

To start playing click on the emulator window, sign in OneDrive (only once at the start) and if all is OK click again to enable FULLSCREEN mode (gamepad input works only in fullscreen mode).
